This group explores how our planet was formed and is still evolving. We discover how the huge variety of rocks is formed, how landscapes have been shaped, how mineral resources are found, and how so many features of our dynamic earth are inter-related. This is a study that makes travel and landscape infinitely more interesting.

We have regular meetings (usually 3 times per month from September to July) for presentations and discussions. Members joining the group come with various levels of prior knowledge, ranging from complete beginner to Open University degree in geology. The common factor is shared enthusiasm, and it is expected that all members will prepare at least one topic for presentation during the course of the year and also contribute to the discussions.

In addition to the regular meetings, we have occasional half-day or full-day external visits and field trips, and also a longer multi-day field trip in the summer. Past field trips have included many visits to local places (such as Walton-on-the-Naze, Bawdsey, Ipswich, Orwell River shore, Hunstanton, West Runton, The Brecks and Grimes Graves, Pakefield and Westleton), and longer trips to places further afield (including South Africa (2009), Ingleton (2010), Anglesea (2011), Dorset Jurassic coast (2012), Pembrokeshire (2013), Snowdonia (2014), Northumbria (2015), Yorkshire coast (2016), West Cornwall (2017), Isle of Wight (2018), Charnwood Forest and the British Geological Survey headquarters (2018), Southern Cyprus (2019), Black Country GeoPark (2019), Brecon Beacons (2021), Assynt in northwest Scotland (2022), Shropshire (2023), Arran (2024), Chilterns (2024), and Peak District (2025).
