ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to machines performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. It comes with benefits and risks which we need to understand. AI works well in complex situations, generating new material and increasing efficiency and productivity across industry, healthcare, education, energy, transport, legal (etc). For example AI can analyze medical images (X-rays, MRIs) and patient data with greater speed and accuracy than humans, leading to earlier and better diagnosis. AI is faster and cheaper than people leading to job losses. However, it will also enhance human capabilities generating new job opportunities. AI is a catalyst for entirely new products, services, and job categories that do not exist today. AI systems learn from historical data, which often contains human biases (e.g., racial, gender). AI-powered facial recognition, surveillance systems and data collection models help fight crime but can impact individual privacy. Generative AI can create highly realistic text, images, and videos (deepfakes). Governments are often slow to respond to the rapid pace of AI development, leading to calls for increased regulation, safety standards, and global governance frameworks. AI can usher in an era of unprecedented prosperity, health, and scientific breakthroughs. However, if left unchecked AI could exacerbate social inequalities, concentrate power in the hands of a few tech giants, and erode the democratic institutions necessary to manage the changes. Whereas the short and medium term benefits and risks of AI are becoming clearer, the long term impact of AI is largely unknown.
The main objectives of the group are to:
1. Educate members about how AI is being used today and will be in the future
2. Demonstrate various AI tools ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity...
3. Explore how AI is used by individuals and groups in their daily lives
4. Examine how the introduction of AI is changing our society
Member contributions welcome.
